Among them, Vietnam is emerging as a potential tilapia supplier in the global supply chain, capitalizing on market fluctuations to expand production and exports.

The event gathered representatives from management agencies, experts, scientists and enterprises to discuss solutions for boosting production, enhancing value and expanding consumption markets for this “promising candidate” in Vietnam’s sustainable export strategy.

This figure exceeded Vietnam’s tilapia export value over the past five years, since 2020. The US remained the largest importer, accounting for 62% of Vietnam’s tilapia exports.

Many farmers have adopted intensive pond farming models, combining proper feeding practices with strict water quality control. As a result, tilapia grows quickly, is less prone to disease, and delivers high yields.

Currently, the price of commercial tilapia in Tra Vinh has doubled compared to last year, helping farmers earn a profit of about 10,000 VND per kilogram.

Tilapia is increasingly viewed as a promising aquaculture species in Tra Vinh province, particularly in the face of black tiger shrimp seed shortages and rising environmental risks in aquaculture. Under the Climate-Smart Agriculture Value Chain Development Project, several households have adopted integrated farming models combining tilapia and whiteleg shrimp, achieving both economic efficiency and improved pond environmental conditions.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) One of the main drivers of growth in the tilapia industry today is the increasing demand for affordable protein sources, as consumers continue to prioritize healthier diets, positioning tilapia as a preferred choice.

The United States is the world’s largest importer of tilapia, while China remains the leading global exporter of this species. However, facing a tariff rate as high as 150%, Chinese tilapia is rapidly losing access to the U.S. market. This development presents a significant opportunity for other exporting countries, including Vietnam, to expand their market share in the U.S. in the coming period.

On the morning of April 17, in Can Tho City, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in collaboration with the Directorate of Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance under the Can Tho Department of Agriculture and Environment, successfully organized the seminar titled “Solutions for organizing tilapia production and export in 2025.”

In recent years, the agricultural and environmental sectors and localities in the province have created favorable conditions to develop and effectively maintain seafood chains, increasing income for people in rural areas.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Brazil has officially stopped importing tilapia products from Vietnam since 14 Feb 2024, according to Decision No. 270 dated 09/02/2024 by the Secretariat of Animal and Plant Health and Inspection, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Supply (MAPA). This decision does not affect Vietnamese businesses too much. However, this can be seen as an initial barrier for Vietnamese tilapia products, and could lead to other seafood products in the Brazilian market.
