GENERAL INFORMATION

Vietnam, with a coastline of over 3,260 kilometers (km) and more than 3,000 islands and islets scattered offshore, plus up to 2,860 rivers and estuaries, has been geographically endowed with ideal conditions for the thriving fishery sector which currently exists.

Great potential of fishery sector in Vietnam is embedded in water bodies of 1.700.000 ha in which 811.700 ha freshwater, 635.400 ha brackish waters and 125.700 ha coves and 300.000 - 400.000 ha wetland areas might be employed for aquaculture development.

The Mekong River Delta in the south and the Red River Delta in the north have been used for wild catch fishing as well as extensive fish farming.

Shrimp and pangasius mostly farmed in the Mekong River Delta, in which, shrimp farmes located in coastal provinces such as Tra Vinh, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Ca Mau, Kien Giang, Ben Tre..

Pangasius farming is developing in many provinces in Mekong River Delta such as Can Tho, Vinh Long, Tien Giang, An Giang, Dong Thap, Soc Trang, Hau Giang, Tra Vinh....

Production in the fishery sector grew at an average rate of 7.05% from 1991 to 2000, and 10% from 2001 to now. Vietnamese fisheries production increased steadily YoY. Aquaculture output tent to sharply rise while capture ouput tend to slow down. In 2023, aquaculture occupied 59%, fishing output occupied 41%. From 2018-2023, ratio of fishing output has decreased from 46% to 41% of total fishery production in Vietnam. In 2023, total aquaculture area was 5.408 million tons, up 3.5%; total fishing output was 3.861 million tons, equal to 2022.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) The first half of 2024 was prosperous for the aquaculture industry of Long An province, with an estimated output of over 69,510 tons, far exceeding the plan and growing strongly compared to the same period last year.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to the latest report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ca Mau province, total fishery production in the first 6 months of 2024 is estimated to reach 326,170 tons, reaching 50.03% of the plan, up 1.56% over the same period last year. Of which, aquaculture output reached 205,300 tons, an increase of 0.64%, and exploitation output reached 120,870 tons, an increase of 3.16%.

(vasep.com.vn) According to Vinh Long Statistics Department, the whole province currently has 2,119 hectares of aquaculture area, an increase of 1.03% (equivalent to an increase of 21.62 hectares) over the same period last year; Of which the industrial pangasius farming area is 370.8 hectares, an increase of 0.12% or an increase of 0.42 hectares.

Total export revenue from agro-forestry-fisheries products in the first three months of this year is estimated at 13.53 billion USD, up 21.8% over the same period last year; and this results in a trade surplus of 3.36 billion USD, a rise of 96.5%, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Economic and social development activities, overexploitation, pollution, diseases, and climate change have adversely affected the ecological environment, leading to a severe decline or the extinction of many precious indigenous aquatic species.

By the end of 2022, Ben Tre’s aquaculture area was 47,590ha; total farming production reached 310,015 tons. Main farmed species included 83,100 tons of brackish water shrimp, 14,900 tons of molluscs, 203,000 tons of pangasius, over 90% of the farmed output has high economic value for export processing. Ben Tre has 13 seafood processing factories for export with a designed capacity of more than 150,000 tons. Seafood export output in 2022 increased by 14.02%. Currently, Ben Tre is calling for investment in a shrimp processing plant to process raw shrimp products of the province.

(vasep.com.vn) Total Vietnam's fishery production (including aquaculture and wild-caught in January 2023 was estimated at 592.1 thousand tons (up 0.2% over the same period in 2022), of which aquaculture production was estimated at 333.7 thousand tons (up 3.5% over the same period in 2022).

Total seafood production of Soc Trang province reached 352,763 tons, exceeding 0.22% of the plan (352,000 tons), increasing by 0.6% compared to the previous year (2,121 tons).

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In December 2022, Vietnam's seafood exports reached 785 million USD, continuing a 13% decrease compared to the same period in 2021. However, thanks to continuous growth in the first 10 months of the year, the seafood exports have reached 11 billion USD, an increase of nearly 24% compared to 2021.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) On December 10, VASEP and seafood enterprises held a celebration of seafood export reaching 10 billion USD celebrating the successful results of a long journey conquering the world market for more than 20 years. 2022 is a year of many records for the seafood industry. Seafood exports broke a record of 11 billion USD, of which the shrimp industry reached a record sales of over 4.3 billion USD. Pangasius exports will reach 2.4 billion USD, a record high and record annual growth of 70%. Tuna also became a billion-dollar industry for the first time.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) On December 2, 2022, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued Decision No. 2615/QD-BCT approving the list of "Prestigious export business" in 2021. Accordingly, there are 46 seafood processing and exporting enterprises in this list.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee has just issued a plan to develop the pangasius industry until 2025. In which, 1,225 hectares of pangasius production will be produced in accordance with the GAP standard and export turnover will reach US$980 million per year.
