OVERVIEW ON VIETNAM CAPTURE FISHERIES

With a coastline of over 3,260 km and an exclusive economic zone of over 1 million km2, the marine resources of Vietnam's waters are considered to be very rich and diverse, with more than 2,000 marine species.

According to the report of the Directorate of Fisheries, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the survey results of Vietnam's marine resources have assessed the current status of seafood resources, identified 1,207 species (945 species of fish; 135 species of crustaceans; 48 species of cephalopods; 50 species of other groups).

Species with high economic value that dominate production include:

- Groups of benthic and small pelagic fish include (19 species): scad, Japanese mackerel, Yellowtail scad, seabream, Greater lizardfish, spotted lizardfish, hairtail, Indo-Pacific blunt-nose lizardfish, red big-eye fish, Red mullet goatfishi, Eeltail catfish, grunter, threadfin bream, Indian mackerel, Indo-Pacific mackerel, anchovies, croaker, hardtail scad;

- Group of pelagic fish (11 types): frigate mackerel, bullet tuna, eastern little tuna, longtail tuna, skipjack tuna, yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna; common bream,  Wahoo, Mahi Mahi;

- Group of cephalopods (04 species): squid, cuttlefish, Bigfin reef squid, ocean squid;

The fishing industry, processing and exporting marine products in Vietnam has grown stronger in recent years, significantly contributing to the growth of seafood exports, opening a promising direction for offshore fishing activities. Marine seafood exports tend to increase from $2.0 billion in 2015 to $3.7 billion in 2023.

In the period from 2015 to 2023, the proportion of marine product export value in total seafood exports increased from 32% to 40%. Export value of marine product has an average growth rate of 8%/year.

Vietnam's marine products are increasingly diversified. Products such as tuna, squid, octopus, bivalve molluscs, crabs and surimi have increasing export sales.

Over the past 5 years, Vietnam's marine products were exported to more than 150 markets around the world. In which, Japan, the US, Korea, EU, China, Thailand, ASEAN were the main seafood import markets of Vietnam, always accounting for over 86% of the total exports.
