Quality control 

Quality control and food safety assurance have always been one of the most important task for Vietnam seafood, especially in processing and exporting.

The fishery sector in recent years have been developing towards sustainability, ensuring exported seafood products can be easy for traceability and well – controlled quality in the whole chain production from seeds to finished products.

Seafood quality and food safety is managed in the chain transferred from Control of Final Products from 80s of last century to Control of Production Process (today).  

Chemicals and Residues Monitoring

Residues Monitoring Program for Certain Harmful Substances in aquaculture fish and products implemented since 2000 in over the country including concentrated aquaculture areas, species with large yield, all crops in all year round. These results are recognized by the U.S, EU, South Korea..

Post harvest seafood quality and safety monitoring program implemented since 2009 in over the country including fishing seafood, aquaculture products (criteria and species not included by the Residues Monitoring Program for Certain Harmful Substances in aquaculture fish and products).

Up to now, almost Vietnamese plants have been meeting national standards of hygiene, 100% plants applied HACCP, 692 EU-qualified (EU code) plants and many factories applied GMP, SSOP.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Nam Viet Corporation (Navico) decided to establish Nam Viet Aquaculture Feed processing one member company - An Giang branch in An Giang province with the main business of producing and processing aqua feeds, wholesale of agricultural and forestry products, rice, wheat, etc.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) From June 12 to June 17, 2022, the VASEP’s IUU Working Group hold a dialogue program with the Sub-Department of Fisheries, fishing ports, fishermen and businesses of Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa on fighting IUU fishing.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) After more than three years of application, super-intensive shrimp farming is considered a model that brings production efficiency and is expected to be expanded and developed soon.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first 4 months of 2022, Vietnam's shrimp exports to Australia reached US$95 million, up 74% over the same period last year and reaching the highest growth compared to the same period in previous years.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) After reaching a record of over $1.1 billion and a growth rate of over 50% in April 2022, entering May, Vietnam’s seafood exports could not maintain a heated growth but still hit the $1 billion mark. This number is 27% higher than the same period last year.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has urged localities to adopt drastic measures to fight irregular, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau has ordered its Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to get tougher on illegal fishing in foreign waters by local fishing ships and their owners.

The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has planned to further promote sustainable marine aquaculture in line with the “Strategy for the Sustainable Development of Vietnam’s Marine Economy by 2030 with a Vision to 2045”.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In 2020, the country's seafood production has reached 8.4 million tons, a slight increase of 3% compared to 2019, of which aquaculture accounts for 54% with nearly 4.6 million tons. accounting for 46% with over 3.8 million tons. Seafood exports reached 8.4 billion USD, down 1.9% compared to 2019, of which aquaculture (shrimp, pangasius) accounted for 62% with 5.2 billion USD, captured seafood accounted for 38% with 3.2 billion USD.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Vietnam sets a target achieving seafood export turnover of US$14-16 billion by 2030 and creates jobs for 3.5 million workers. By 2045, fisheries will be a modern commercial economy, a deep seafood processing hub, which belongs to the group of three leading countries in the world.

(vasep.com.vn) In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic spread out all over the world that had a tremendous impact on the world tuna industry in general and the Vietnamese tuna industry in particular. Despite the difficulties, Vietnamese tuna processing and exporting enterprises have still been making efforts to overcome drawbacks.

With the average seafood import demand of 4.1-4.5 billion USD/year, Vietnam seafood has great room to increase exports to the UK market thanks to the push from the UKVFTA Free Trade Agreement.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) confirmed it has decided to postpone an on-site audit in Vietnam.

The European Commission has delisted Thailand from the group of "warned countries" as recognition of its progress in tackling illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
