(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In Gia Vien district, tilapia farming—particularly the “duong nghiep” strain—is expanding rapidly and gradually becoming an efficient production model for local farmers. Hatcheries in the area are supplying high-quality, uniform, and disease-free fingerlings, meeting the growing demand for commercial farming.

“Duong nghiep” tilapia is a selectively bred strain with a fast growth rate, reaching 0.7–1 kg per fish within 5–6 months. It adapts well to various environmental conditions, has a high survival rate, and is less prone to disease, making it suitable for different farming systems, including earthen ponds, cages, and concrete tanks.
Thanks to these advantages, many farmers in Gia Vien have shifted to intensive farming, applying environmental control techniques and using industrial feed to improve productivity. Stocking densities can reach 3–5 fish per square meter, or even higher in intensive systems equipped with oxygen supply.
In addition, the market for tilapia remains relatively stable, with farm-gate prices ranging from VND 42,000 to 50,000 per kilogram. The product is widely consumed in local markets and restaurants and shows potential for expansion into export markets.
The development of local hatcheries enables farmers to secure their seed supply, reduce transportation costs, and minimize disease risks. At the same time, it provides a foundation for Ninh Binh’s tilapia sector to develop into a commodity-based industry with higher value and sustainability.
Amid rising market demand, tilapia continues to be regarded as a key aquaculture species, contributing to agricultural economic growth and providing stable livelihoods for local communities.
