BAP

To promote responsible practices across the aquaculture industry, the Global Aquaculture Alliance coordinates the development of Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification standards for hatcheries, farms, processing facilities and feed mills. 

The BAP program drives continued improvements via high standards that deliver significant benefits industrywide. The BAP standards cover aquaculture facilities for a variety of finish and crustacean species, as well as mussels.

VIET GAP

To contribute to promoting aquaculture seafood, agriculture products and food safety in general and fruit and vegetable for consumption in the country in particular and exports, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development issued the Criteria VietGAP on 01/28/2008.

VietGAP (Vietnamese Good Agriculture Practices): Practices good agriculture production in Vietnam is based on 04 criteria, such as Standard on production techniques; Food safety including measures to ensure no chemical contamination or physical contamination during harvesting; Working environment aims to prevent abuse of the labor of farmers; Product traceability. 

On 31 December 2015, all commercial fish farms must apply and be certified by VietGAP or other international certifications under Decree No. 36/2014/ND-CP dated 29/04/2014 about farming, processing and export of pangasius products. The Decree comes into force on 20 June 2014. The certification program is encouraged in farming many other fishes in Vietnam.

Certifications

Economic and social development activities, overexploitation, pollution, diseases, and climate change have adversely affected the ecological environment, leading to a severe decline or the extinction of many precious indigenous aquatic species.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In December 2022, Vietnam's seafood exports reached 785 million USD, continuing a 13% decrease compared to the same period in 2021. However, thanks to continuous growth in the first 10 months of the year, the seafood exports have reached 11 billion USD, an increase of nearly 24% compared to 2021.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) On December 10, VASEP and seafood enterprises held a celebration of seafood export reaching 10 billion USD celebrating the successful results of a long journey conquering the world market for more than 20 years. 2022 is a year of many records for the seafood industry. Seafood exports broke a record of 11 billion USD, of which the shrimp industry reached a record sales of over 4.3 billion USD. Pangasius exports will reach 2.4 billion USD, a record high and record annual growth of 70%. Tuna also became a billion-dollar industry for the first time.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) From June 12 to June 17, 2022, the VASEP’s IUU Working Group hold a dialogue program with the Sub-Department of Fisheries, fishing ports, fishermen and businesses of Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa on fighting IUU fishing.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) After more than three years of application, super-intensive shrimp farming is considered a model that brings production efficiency and is expected to be expanded and developed soon.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first 4 months of 2022, Vietnam's shrimp exports to Australia reached US$95 million, up 74% over the same period last year and reaching the highest growth compared to the same period in previous years.

On the afternoon of June 11, 2021, the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) jointly organized a webinar "Discuss on a number of contents in the ASC Standards - Cooperation Initiative between ASC and VASEP”.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) The Vietnam Record Organization has just recognized Minh Phu Seafood Corporation as the owner of the largest organic shrimp farming area in Vietnam's mangroves, with a total area of 9,722 hectares and a total area of 9,722 hectares and participation of 2010 Ca Mau farmer households.

On May 19th, 2021, at the webinar "Sustainability certification: win-win cooperation for effective application" organized by VASEP, the Association has announced the decision to establish the VASEP Sustainability Certifications Advisory Council (VASEP CERACO) with a list of council members, operating regulations and annual action plan of 2021. VASEP CERACO Council will support VASEP member businesses to apply well and conveniently international sustainability certifications.

The southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau has ordered its Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to get tougher on illegal fishing in foreign waters by local fishing ships and their owners.

The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has planned to further promote sustainable marine aquaculture in line with the “Strategy for the Sustainable Development of Vietnam’s Marine Economy by 2030 with a Vision to 2045”.
