Bangladesh pushes for modernization of shrimp industry

Using traditional farming methods Bangladeshi shrimp production lags behind its Asian neighbors. Shrimp and frozen foods processing plants in Bangladesh are running at less than 80 percent capacity due to low production, The Daily Star reported from a seminar organized by the Bangladesh Frozen Foods and Exporters Association (BFFEA).

Vietnamese pangasius export recovered in May 2013

(pangasius-vietnam.com) Most of import markets of Vietnamese pangasius showed recovery signs since April 2013. According to Vietnam Customs, pangasius exports reached US$174.09 million in May 2013, up 15.7 percent compared with that of May 2012. In the first five months, Vietnam generated US$708.89 million, up 1.5 percent from the same period of 2012.

UK introduces new nutritional labeling

(SeafoodSource) A new system of front-of-pack food labeling is to be rolled out in the U.K. during the next 18 months. It will combine color-coding and nutritional information to show how much fat, saturated fat, salt and sugar, and how many calories, are in each product.

Crab exports to Canada saw a positive advance

(vasep.com.vn) According to Vietnam Customs, in the first 5 months of 2013, Vietnam’s exports of crab and swimming crab reached US$27.7 million, down 21.6 percent on that reported in the same time of 2012. The figure in May 2013 was US$5.1 million, down 41.3 percent on that of May 2012.

Vinh Hoan Corp exports most pangasius in January-April period

In April, Vietnam exported pangasius products for USD 146.3 million, up 1.8 per cent over the same period of 2012. Meanwhile, in January–April 2013, pangasius exports brought in USD 534.8 million, down 6 per cent year-on-year.

Shrimp exports to the U.S. edged up 18.2 percent

(vasep.com.vn) Along with Japan and EU, the U.S. is one of three main importers of Vietnam shrimp. In 2012, Vietnam shrimp shipments to this market sharply decreased of 18.6 percent from the previous year due to low demand, instability of domestic raw shrimp supplies and disease outbreaks.

Salmon production drop expected in 2014

The Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) estimates that next year, salmon and trout total production will be about 530,000 tonnes, which represents a decrease of 24 per cent compared to that expected for 2013, reaching 700,000 tonnes.

Vietfish 2013 was opened

The 15th exhibition greets thousands of visitors, hundreds of enterprises inside and outside the country.
