China: Strong tilapia prices drive shortage of larger sizes

Strong prices are driving Chinese tilapia farmers to harvest their fish early, causing a short supply of the larger sizes and a higher proportion of 300-500 gram fish, said industry players. Farmers are harvesting their fish as soon as possible, in part as they fear a drop in price ahead, said Landy Chow, the China representative for the exporter Siam Canadian Group.

R.H. Ward’s (Welton) tilapia farm, The Fish Company, in the United Kingdom is Europe’s first tilapia farm to attain Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification, the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) announced at Seafood Expo Global in Brussels, Belgium, on 6 May. It’s also the United Kingdom’s first aquaculture farm to achieve the distinction.

Japan’s frozen yellowfin imports plummeted a dramatic 44 percent in August 2013 compared to August 2012. Volume dropped from 4,026 tons to just 2,228 tons for the same month year on year.

(vasep.com.vn) In August 2013, Phu Cuong Seafood Processing and Import Export (Phu Cuong Jostoco Corp) sold 66.4 MT of shrimp products abroad to bring back US$574.5 thousand of revenue. In the first eight months, shrimp exports were 934.8 MT and US$8,6 million.

Chile sent 51,119 tonnes of mussels (Mytilus chilensis) abroad between January and August this year, representing an increase of 8.6 per cent compared to exports in the same period of 2012 (47,058 tonnes).

The fish landings accumulated up to August 2013 totalled 1.8 million tonnes, 28.8 per cent less than in the first eight months of 2012, when 2.5 million tonnes were landed, the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) reported.

The Indian seafood sector appears to be well on course to achieve $4.3 billion worth export targeted for the current year, spurred by high demand for cultured shrimps from the US and South East Asia.
