(vasep.com.vn) Fish farmers will be compulsory to adopt the Vietnamese Good Agriculture Practice (VietGAP) standards in their farming process. VietGAP is also a base to link producers, consumers and retailers, Mr. Pham Anh Tuan – Deputy General Director of the Directorate of Fisheries (D-Fish) revealed in the workshop “Seeking co-operation in strengthening application of VietGAP” recently held in Ho Chi Minh city.

German buyers have strongly increased their imports of canned tuna so far this year. Ecuador has taken the top spot for supplying canned tuna to Germany from January to July this year, followed by Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam. The South American country has strengthened its position from standing in third place in 2012.

(vasep.com.vn) According to Directorate of Fisheries, through September 2013, total fish production reached 4.5 million MT, up 2.7 percent over 2012. In which, marine fish landing totaled 2.1 million MT (+3.3 percent) and aquaculture production reached 2.4 million MT (+2.1 percent).

(vasep.com.vn) By 2020, Can Tho province will have 26,000 hectares for aquaculture, 13,000-hectare increase compared to the current superficies. Fishery production is expected to reach 335,000 MT, 160,000 MT of which are exported for total value of over US$1 billion.

Tuna Store Checks In EU-5 Show Surprising Results On Eco-label Use

Strong growth in the presence of seafood carrying the MSC eco-label has been revealed in a recent store check of EU supermarkets. In some supermarkets, at least 60 percent of frozen seafood checked displayed the logo, with increasing penetration also visible across the canned seafood sector. In all major wild seafood groups compared, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) eco-label had the least presence on canned and frozen tuna.

This is 23 percent off the trajectory for 2013 based on the past decade, he said. Up until two years ago, global output was growing at a 5 percent rate each year, but it dropped 6.7 percent between 2011 and 2012 and 9.6 percent between 2012 and 2013, to about 3.5 million metric tons.
