Viet Nam is preparing necessary procedures

 Viet Nam-WCPFC relations

Under the Decree No538/VPCP-NC dated July 25, 2007 of the Vietnam Prime Minister, the former Ministry of Fisheries was assigned to coordinate with other relevant ministries and agencies to study the Convention on the Conservation and Management of the Highly Migratory Fish Stocks. Joining the Convention for each country will adhere to access to the regional fisheries management organizations. And for Viet Nam it is WCPFC.

To work out the route for joining WCPFC, Viet Nam and sent representatives to international conferences on tuna fishing and trading. According to initial research, presently Viet Nam is not qualified for CPFC’s membership due to lack of data system on fishing species; limited capabilities of implementing programmes on monitoring and inspecting fishing activities; poor system on Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS); unavailable centres for monitoring fishing vessels at sea. On the other hand, joining WCPFC, Viet Nam will be subject to fishing quota allocation.
