(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Golden pompano is being selected as a high-value species for the development of high-tech marine aquaculture in Lam Dong Province. In 2026, the provincial Agricultural Extension Center launched a golden pompano farming model using circular HDPE cages in Lien Huong Commune, opening opportunities to apply technology to marine farming at a scale suited to local coastal conditions.
The model comprises four HDPE cages, each equipped with a three-ring frame and measuring 40 meters in circumference. The system is integrated with surface-monitoring cameras, satellite positioning equipment, stainless-steel platforms, solar panels, batteries, and a wireless transmitter, helping farmers monitor and manage fish stocks more conveniently. This represents a further step in the transition from traditional wooden cages to cage systems made from materials that offer greater resistance to marine conditions.
In Phan Ri Cua, golden pompano is also among the commonly farmed seafood species, alongside cobia and grouper. Farmers use locally caught trash fish as feed, helping reduce costs while ensuring the freshness of feed supplies. Some cage-farming households report profit margins of around 30–50%, while in years with favorable weather conditions, margins can reach 60–70%.
The transition to HDPE cages is expected to facilitate the expansion of marine fish farming from sheltered bays to more exposed offshore areas, where water circulation is better but cages face greater demands for resistance to waves and strong winds. However, the relatively high investment cost of HDPE cages remains a barrier for many farming households.
Under the province’s marine aquaculture development strategy, golden pompano continues to be identified as one of the species suitable for farming in HDPE cages in offshore areas, alongside grouper, cobia, and Asian seabass.
