According to Tra Vinh’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the provincial saltwater and brackishwater aquaculture area increased remarkably with diversified farmed species. As a result, the seafood production in 2009 was valued at VND2,125 billion.
In 2009, local farmers stocked more than 1.345 billion of black tiger shrimp PL in an area of 21,062ha, including more than 1,711ha of intensive farming, with an output of more than 16,306MT of market-sized shrimp. Most of shrimp farmers are reported to gain profits.
In the districts of Chau Thanh, Duyen Hai and Tra Cu, more than 10,000 farmers stocked 40.5 million of crab juveniles in a water surface area of 11,158ha, and gained an output of about 5,700MT.
The provincial agricultural authorities provided farmer with regular consultancy services and encouraged individuals and organizations to invest more than VND10 billion in upgrading and expanding shrimp hatcheries to ensure shrimp seed supply, reducing production costs, and enhancing competitiveness.
In 2009, more than 650 million of shrimp PL have been produced, partly meeting demand of local farmers. (VietFishNews)
