Strong fishmeal export recover seen in December

In December last year Peruvian seafood exports generated USD 267.9 million in revenue, representing 83.7 per cent more than in the same month in 2012, when their value was USD 145.8 million, the Ministry of Production (produce) informed.

The volume of exports grew by 106.4 per cent year on year, from 75,700 to 156,300 tonnes, mainly due to higher fishmeal sales.

As it is indicated in the latest Statistical Bulletin issued by Produce, between January and December 2013, the sale of 1.4 million tonnes abroad generated USD 2,751.1 million, while in 2012 around 2.1 million tonnes were exported for USD 3,326.6 million.

Only in December 2013, a total of 116,200 tonnes of fishmeal was exported, representing 205 per cent more compared to the 33,200 tonnes exported a year earlier.

The value of these shipments was USD 157.7 million, that is to say, 179.6 per cent more from the same month in 2012 (USD 56.4 million).

However, last year less fishmeal was exported: 846,700 tonnes, which represented 33.3 per cent less than in 2012 (1,270,000 tonnes).

The total value of fishmeal shipments was USD 1,355 million, 20 per cent less than in 2012 (USD 1,693.2 million).

Meanwhile, last December crude oil exports totalled 2,500 tonnes for USD 5.2 million, 24.7 per cent less than in the same month of 2012 (USD 6.9 million).

Taking into account the whole 2013, a total of 98,800 tonnes of oil was sold abroad, 63.6 per cent less than in the previous year (271,700 tonnes).

These sales generated USD 234.7 million, an amount which represents a decrease of 46.1 per cent compared to 2012 (USD 435.6 million).

In December 2013 some 23,100 tonnes of frozen products were also exported, a figure that accounts for a decrease of 18.1 per cent compared to the 28,200 tonnes exported a year earlier.

Throughout the last year, 376,100 tonnes of frozen products were sold abroad, 9.3 per cent less than in 2012 (414,400 tonnes).
