(vasep.com.vn) Among 19 markets in EU, Spain became the 3rd largest market for cephalopod from Vietnam, from the previous 5th position.
In Spain, seafood products have been favorably consumed. Spanish spends 11% of total spending in retailers on seafood, the second highest category.
In 2014, Vietnam cephalopod exports to Spain valued US$ 5.15 million, up 98.4% year on year. These 3 years, this market has maintained the strongest growth comparing to other European countries. In the early 2014, cephalopod exports to Spain grew slowly but from Q4/ 2014, Vietnam businesses increased exports to this market and growth rates surged to 125-493%.
From January to November 2014, Vietnam was listed in top 15 largest cephalopod suppliers to Spain, though the export value was relatively small comparing to Morocco, China or India. In 2014, about 50 - 65% of Spain’s cephalopod imports were squid frozen, dried, salted or in brine (HS 030 749) of total imports. This was followed by frozen octopus (HS 030 759) with 27 - 40%, processed octopus (HS 160554-55) accounted for less than 3%.
Morocco and the Malvinas were two major sources of cephalopod in Spain, accounting for 50% to 73% of the total import value. However, in 2014, the market share of Morocco reduced with the influence of China, India and Vietnam.
It is expected that in 2015, Spain will continue to be a potential market in the EU. Vietnamese exporters can seek opportunities in this market along with Italy.
