Rosrybolovstvo wants to increase Russian fish production by fiat

Russia plans to increase fish production up to 5 million tonnes this year, if the Russian Fisheries Agency Rosrybolovstvo is to be believed.

Russian Rosrybolovstvo plans to increase the volume of fish catch up to 5 million tonnes in 2014, according to an official representative of the agency.

According to Andrei Gornichyh, head of the department of fishing policy, this year the total volume of fish and seafood production by Russian fishermen reached 4.31 million tonnes, which is slightly higher than in 2012, when these figurese were at the level of 4.269 million tonnes.

Of these, the volume of catch in foreign waters amounted to 436,700 tonnes, while in convention areas and the high seas catch was 170,500 tons.

The biggest volume of catch accounted for was in the Far East basin, where it reached 2.77 million tonnes, of which the production of pollock reached 1.54 million tonnes.

According to Gornichyh, this year’s growth is insufficient and, according to plans of Rosrybolovstvo, by the end of 2014 total catch should exceed 5 million tonnes.

Since 2008 Russia has increased its catch by 1 million tons, however, according to analysts of Rosrybolovstvo, this is not enough and the country has a lot of reserves for further increase.

According to Gornichyh, in order to increase catch, Russia plans to pay more attention to undeveloped resources, both in domestic waters and zones of foreign countries and to start more active use of electronic ship's fishing logs. It is planned that at the initial stage this system will be introduced in the Far East and North fishery basins, while later in others such as Inlamd waters.

There are also plans for implementation of other measures, which are not disclosed. The list of measures will be finally designed by Rosrybolovstvo by February, 20 of the current year and will be sent for approval of the Russian government.
