Quang Nam: More fishing unions to boost deep sea catch

(vasep.com.vn) Quang Nam province is enhancing the establishment of fishing unions in coastal villages with an aim to further distant fishing trips and sea catches.

The province has 6 districts for which fishing is their livelihood, including Nui Thanh, Thanb Binh, Duy Xuyen, Dien Ban, Tam Ky and Hoi An, with more than 10,000 workers. However, there are only four fishing unions with 648 members, accounting for 0.6 percent now.

In 2014, Quang Nam's Foundation for fishermen assistance plans to help fishermen to build new 10 – 15 fishing boats in order to develop deep sea fishing fleets with high capacity. So far this year, the establishment of fishing unions is kicked off in 10 coastal villages operating fishing trips in Hoang Sa and Truong Sa islands.

In order to ensure the efficiency of their operation, the Quang Nam province guides local fishing unions to set up operation principles as well as provide them with financial assistances. The objective of this model is to tighten up links between boats owners and their fishermen to ensure the benefit of all and contribute to sovereignty protection.

This is also a good way to mobilize capital and encourage fishermen to go fishing offshore to earn more profits.
