Phu Quoc Fish Sauce Granted EU Protection

Vietnam’s Phu Quoc fish sauce has been granted Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status by the European Union.

The PDO is one of the EU’s three schemes to promote and protect names of quality agricultural products and foodstuffs.

The certification means that only fish sauce produced on the island of Phu Quoc can use this label in the European Union. This product would be more favorable in the European market, avoiding the risk of counterfeit. Over the years, a number of Vietnam’s famous agricultural products have been faked and sold to the EU, including Phu Quoc fish sauce.

Head of EU Delegation to Vietnam Fanz Jessen said the protection in the EU will increase the value of Phu Quoc fish sauce and bring direct benefits to manufacturers in Vietnam.

Phu Quoc fish sauce is made from anchovies harvested near Phu Quoc island using a traditional recipe. It has long been a famous brand of condiment in Vietnam for its special flavour.

This is the first product of the ASEAN to officially secured the Protected Designation of Origin in the 28 EU member countries, and is the first product of Vietnam to be recognized and given Protected Geographical Indication in the European Union.
