Currently, the farming area of clam and blood ark shell at the river estuaries in provinces of Ben Tre, Tien Giang, Tra Vinh, Kien Giang, Bac Lieu, and Soc Trang reduced to 19,500ha, of which 14,800ha for clam farming, and 4,700ha for blood shell farming. Ground and raft farming are two most popular methods. Provinces are striving to increase yield to more than 7MT per ha, and total production of 114,500MT of clam and 25,500MT of blood shell a year.
The model “sustainable clam farming” will be extended to the areas with abundant clam resources and favorable natural conditions in the region. Along with developing commercial clam farming, it is necessary to zone breeding clam grounds in the districts of Binh Dai, Ben Tre province (about 900ha), and in Go Cong Dong, Tien Giang province (about 350ha), to guarantee enough seeds for farmers.
