Fishery production of 388 thousand MT in January

(vasep.com.vn) In January 2014, Vietnam reported 388 thousand MT of fishery production, a rise of 3 percent month over month, according to the report by Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). In which, catches were 206 thousand MT, up 5.6 percent; aquaculture was 182 thousand MT, up 2 percent.

Farmed shrimp output in January totaled 29.9 thousand MT, up 4.9 percent. Shrimp producing provinces remained superficies for shrimp farming. Local farmers are renovating their intensive farming ponds for the new harvest.

Pangasius farmers continue to meet difficulties due to lower export prices, leading to a drop in the fish output of several provinces in Mekong Delta. Can Tho saw a drop of 11 percent, Ben Tre down 8 percent, Vinh Long 7 percent and An Giang 5 percent.

Of wild catches, finfish species were 164.4 thousand MT (+0.5 percent) and shrimp species were 9.9 thousand MT (+2.1 percent). Marine catch increased by 0.9 percent to 204.1 thousand MT.
