(vasep.com.vn) In 2013, South Korea was still the largest importer of Vietnam cephalopod, making up nearly 31 percent of Vietnam’s total cephalopod export value. However, Vietnam’s exports of the item to the market in 2013 slowed down due to its fierce competition with other suppliers such as China, Mauritania, Morocco, or Indonesia.
Vietnam cephalopod exports to Korea in 2013 totaled US$138 million, down 6.7 percent year on year. Despite positive growth in Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to the market in late 2013, it was insufficient to compensate for sharp decline in exports in early months of 2013.
Cuttlefish and squid in shelled or not, frozen, dried, salted or in brine (HS code 030749) and octopus in frozen, dried, salted or in brine (HS code 030759) are Vietnam’s key export items to Korea with the proportion of 92 percent among the country’s total cephalopod to the market.
According to South Korea Customs, among total seafood imports into the market, cephalopod ranked the third behind marine finfish and shrimp, in which cephalopod products (HS code 030749) took a major proportion of 85 percent.
Vietnam is the second largest supplier of mollusk (HS code 0307) to Korea behind China. However, in 2013, South Korea shifted to source cephalopod from suppliers such as Thailand and Indonesia where there were stable supply and cheaper price.
The trend was continued in the early 2014 when Vietnam cephalopod exports to Korea in January this year reached over US$12.4 million, down 1.4 percent year on year.
