Shrimp seed production of local hatcheries can only meet 50 – 60 percent of demand for stocking. Persistent and serious shortage of shrimp seed exposed a lot of hardship for shrimp farmers, impact negatively to shrimp production of the province – a shrimp hub of Vietnam.
Shrimp seed trading and producing are not controlled closely by local relevant authorities, leading to instability in its price, quality and disease risks. This is considered as one of reasons causing shrimp massive mortality and lost billions of VND for farmers.
To limit diseases on farmed shrimp and reduce risks to farmers, experts advised to select shrimp seed at reliable hatcheries, shrimp seed is ensured to be healthful, free diseases and stocked in a right process.
Ca Mau spent nearly VND15 billion of provincial budget to support poor shrimp farmers or farmers living just above the poverty in taking seed sample to test in order to detect diseases such as white spot disease, red body disease, yellow head disease, liver disease and pancreatic necrosis and some other diseases before stocking. The province also directed relevant agencies to accelerate controlling shrimp seed quality, inspecting and treating shrimp seed of unknown origin and popularizing techniques for local seed shrimp producing facilities.
