Can Tho promotes sustainable aquaculture development

(vasep.com.vn) According to Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Can Tho, total aquaculture area of the city in the first 7 months of 2014 was 8,100 hectares, up 1.19% year on year. Aquacultural harvests reached 77,320 MT, up 7.73% year on year.

The aquaculture areas applied internatinal standards in the province are being boosted. The aquaculture is headed towards sustainability, food safety, environmental sanitation, high quality products to meet domestic demands and for exports as well as to improve efficiency.

The province has 53 hectares of aquacultural farming fulfilling Global GAP, ASC, BMP, GAP and other standards. Most of these grow pangasius. The province plans to expand of the total fish farming areas apllied these standards to 127 hectares, consisting of 1 hectare with VietGAP standards, 25 hectares meeting GlobalGAP, 34 hectares fulfilling BMP and 67 hectares certified by ASC.

Farming facilities for traditional fish varieties of high value are strengthened and fish hatcheries are more upgradd to develop local fishes. Currently, Can Tho has 105 hatcheries with the production of reaching 1.3 billion seeds per year.
