China’s ban on raw shrimp imports from Vietnam will not affect Vietnamese shrimp production and export, said the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP). The National Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department (Nafiqad) on Monday confirmed that China had decided to stop importing Vietnamese material tiger prawns due to virus infection.

Many fish caught off the coast of Fukushima are still showing high levels of radioactive cesium. This indicates that, since the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that caused the nuclear disaster on 11 March 2011, the seafloor or leakage from the damaged reactors must still be contaminating the area – something that could affect fisheries for decades, a researcher warned.

(vasep.com.vn) In 2012, land used in pangasius aquaculture totaled 1,679.03 hectares in Dong Thap province, said Dong Thap Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. To 5thNovember 2012, pangasius producers in the province have produced 331,791 MT of fish on an area of 902.04 hectares. Production of fingerlings reached 580.57 million of pieces. The province has currently 776.99 hectares in production and other 70.9 hectares taken out of operation.

Major fast-food player KFC takes its sustainable development commitment to a higher level by obtaining MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certification. The fish KFC offers, which is 100 per cent pollock, is now from sustainable fishing. This initiative further underscores the chain's desire to ensure its products' quality, traceability and safety.

(vasep.com.vn) 2012 has been a tough year for seafood business community in Vietnam. However, Da Nang Sea Products Import-Export Corporation (Seaprodex Danang) still obtained good result in sales abroad. Between January and October this year, the company has exported 3,000 MT of seafood products to earn back US$21.77 million, equal to those in the compatible time in 2011.

Farm-raised catfish processed during September 2012 totaled 24.5 million pounds round weight, down 19 percent from September 2011. The average price paid to producers was 79.3 cents per pound for September 2012, down 0.5 cent from last month and 48.2 cents below a year ago.
