Seafood exports hit over US$6.7 billion

(vasep.com.vn) According to Vietnam Customs, the country’s seafood exports in 2013 hit US$6.7 billion, up 9.6 percent year-on-year. The figure included shrimp sales of over US$3billion, up 39 percent year-on-year; pangasius sales of US$1.76 billion, up 1 percent; tuna export turnover of US$527 million, down 7.2 percent and US$448 million of cephalopod exports, down 11 percent.

(fis.com) Indian seafood exports to China must now be accompanied by a required inspection and quarantine certificate effective 1 June 2012. As India had not been included in the list of the approved countries to conduct business with China, exports to this country were stagnant during April and May.

In 2013, canned tuna imports into the US fell to seven year lows. From June to November 2013, the amount of canned tuna shipped into the US has hit lower levels than imports of the last six years. Currently, no December import figures are available yet for comparison.

China and South Korea are becoming the newly emerging bluefin markets, as South Australia’s tuna exports to the two countries soar dramatically. The region’s tuna industry has said the new export boom is boosting flagging prices and attracting interest from Chinese investors.
