Can Tho: Technical Recommendations for Brackish Water Shrimp Farming in 2026

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) With forecasts indicating that weather conditions in 2026 may become more complex—featuring prolonged heatwaves, unseasonal rains, and increased salinity intrusion—the agricultural sector of Can Tho City advises brackish water shrimp farmers to strictly follow the seasonal farming calendar and strengthen pond environmental management to minimize risks and improve production efficiency.

Dry and high-salinity conditions are forecast to intensify in late February and March, while heatwaves may last from late March to early May, with temperatures reaching up to 37°C. Therefore, authorities recommend limiting stocking activities in January and in the final months of the year (October, November, and December) to reduce risks related to survival rates and shrimp quality.

The 2026 brackish water shrimp farming calendar runs from January through the end of September. Whiteleg shrimp may be stocked starting January 21, and black tiger shrimp from February 1 to September 30. For shrimp–rice farming models, shrimp must be harvested before September to prepare for the rice crop.

The fisheries sector encourages the adoption of effective farming models such as multi-phase culture systems, the use of probiotics, and polyculture with certain fish species to stabilize the pond environment and reduce disease risks. At the same time, farmers are advised to select seed with clear origins, avoid excessive stocking densities, strictly implement biosecurity measures, and follow proper zoning plans to ensure effective production in 2026.
