GENERAL INFORMATION

Vietnam, with a coastline of over 3,260 kilometers (km) and more than 3,000 islands and islets scattered offshore, plus up to 2,860 rivers and estuaries, has been geographically endowed with ideal conditions for the thriving fishery sector which currently exists.

Great potential of fishery sector in Vietnam is embedded in water bodies of 1.700.000 ha in which 811.700 ha freshwater, 635.400 ha brackish waters and 125.700 ha coves and 300.000 - 400.000 ha wetland areas might be employed for aquaculture development.

The Mekong River Delta in the south and the Red River Delta in the north have been used for wild catch fishing as well as extensive fish farming.

Shrimp and pangasius mostly farmed in the Mekong River Delta, in which, shrimp farmes located in coastal provinces such as Tra Vinh, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Ca Mau, Kien Giang, Ben Tre..

Pangasius farming is developing in many provinces in Mekong River Delta such as Can Tho, Vinh Long, Tien Giang, An Giang, Dong Thap, Soc Trang, Hau Giang, Tra Vinh....

Production in the fishery sector grew at an average rate of 7.05% from 1991 to 2000, and 10% from 2001 to now. The country produces annually over 6 million MT of fish, in which its landings reached 2.7 million MT and aquaculture reached 3.3 million MT. In 2021, total fisheries production reached 8.7 million MT, including 3.9 million tons from catching and 4.85 million tons from aquaculture.

Phu Yen: Good catch of ocean tuna

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) At the end of the lunar year, at two fishing ports of Dong Tac (Tuy Hoa City) and Phu Lac (Dong Hoa District), boats arrived at full speed, the working atmosphere of fishermen was also more urgent to take advantage of fishing. In particular, over a week, dozens of tuna fishing vessels of Phu Yen fishermen landed with high yields every day.

Mr. Phan Thuan, Chairman of Fishery Union of Ward 6, said that more than two thirds of offshore fishing boats in ward 6 landed, including 80% of fishing vessels with high profit. On average, each fishing vessel has 30-50 MT of ocean tuna, with the output of 1.2-2 MT; in particular, there was a fishing gear of 2.5-3 MT. For flying fish, fishing boats also harvested from 8-12 MT each boats.

Recently, the provincial People's Committee has instructed Tuy Hoa city to expedite the dredging of the channel of Da Dien estuary in order to create favorable conditions for fishermen to exploit sea products.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tri Phuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, production of fishery exploited in January 2018 was estimated at 4,100 MT, up nearly 1% over the same period last year, including ocean tuna with 220 MT ( increased by 3.8%). In order to create favorable conditions for the next season, the province is interested and concentrates on dredging the canal into the fishing ports, creating conditions for vessels to enter safely. In 2018, Phu Yen is restructuring the fishing fleet, buying seafood under the project of restructuring the agricultural sector of the province in the direction of increasing value added and sustainable development. The formation of a fleet of logistics services on the sea is very necessary and Phu Yen encouraged the development of this fleet.
