Vietnamese tra fish quality compatibility may be approved by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) under the US Department of Agriculture, though an official announcement has yet to be released, according to Truong Dinh Hoe, general secretary of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Vietnam’s shrimp exports to EU registered the good growth in the first half of the year. However, exports to this market in July began to fall by 14.6% to see US$74 million. This was driven by a dip in the price of raw shrimp which affected on the export price. In the first seven months of this year, Vietnam’s shrimp exports to the EU market reached US$479.8 million, an increase of 26% over the same period last year.

The domestic fishing industry should promote production of tra fish and shrimp by the end of this year to take advantage of the export potential of both commodities on the world market, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Intensive processing has served as an effective tool for Vietnamese shrimp exporters to improve their competitive capacity in the context of a steep increase in the global supply which brought down the price and demand for shrimp in major markets.

Vietnam earned 369.1 million USD from exporting tra fish to the US in the first nine months of this year, up 42.9 percent year-on-year.
