Shrimp exports to Canada surged by nearly 32%

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Canada ranked the 6th in Vietnam shrimp imports, accounting for 5.7% of total Vietnam's shrimp exports to markets. Vietnam's shrimp exports to Canada in the first four months of this year still recorded double-digit growth despite the context of the Covid-19 epidemic.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to the International Trade Center (ITC), in the first four months of this year, shrimp imports into Japan reached US$ 638 million, down 0.5% from the same period in 2019. Japan was also one of the earliest affected in Asia by the COVID-19 pandemic, so the demand for shrimp imports of this market was somewhat affected by the epidemic. Among the top 5 key shrimp suppliers to Japan, shrimp imports into Japan from India lifted the most, imports from Vietnam and China slightly augmented meanwhile imports from Thailand and Indonesia fell.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In May 2020, Vietnamese cephalopod exports reached nearly US$ 42 million, down nearly 25% compared to May 2019. In the first 5 months of the year, cephalopod exports reached nearly US$192 million, down 21.2% over the same period in 2019. The impact of the COVID-19 epidemic reduced demand and production materials. Therefore, Vietnamese cephalopod exports in the first 5 months of 2020 continued to decline.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Vietnam’s pangasius export value to three markets of China - Hong Kong, Singapore, and the UK in April 2020 grew positively by 20.1%; 127.6%, and 20.3%, respectively. By the end of April 2020, the total export value of pangasius reached US$449.5 million, down nearly 27% over the same period in 2019. Most of the major importers (among the top 10 largest importers of Vietnamese pangasius) all slid. On the contrary, exports to Singapore rose by 12.7% and that to the UK lifted by 1.1% over the same period in 2019.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) The Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect Vietnam's tuna exports to markets. By the end of April 2020, Vietnam's total tuna export value reached US$ 196 million, down 16% compared to the same period in 2019. So far, Vietnam's tuna exports to markets have not been signs of recovery. However, there are also some good signals from import markets such as Japan and Egypt. Tuna exporters are also trying to expand exports to new markets to offset the decline in traditional markets.

Seafood is one of the key export items of Vietnam, maintaining an annual growth momentum, contributing to the achievement of the overall export goal of the agricultural sector. In the context of export difficulties, to help businesses and localities overcome difficulties, effectively exploit the domestic market, leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development direct the Agricultural Trade Promotion Center to coordinate with the Directorate of Fisheries and the relevant units to organize a Pangasius Week in Hanoi in 2020.
