Ca Mau expands RAS-IMTA shrimp farming model to 1,500 hectares

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) The People's Committee of Ca Mau Province has just issued a plan to expand the super-intensive, low-water-exchange, biosecure white-leg shrimp farming model (RAS-IMTA) for whiteleg shrimp farming to a scale of 1,500 hectares, aiming to develop high-tech, sustainable and environmentally friendly shrimp farming.

Previously, the 100-hectare RAS-IMTA pilot model achieved an average yield of 35 tons/ha/crop, a survival rate of 70–90% and a feed conversion ratio (FCR) of only 1.2–1.3. The model helps reduce costs, increase profits and protect the environment through water recirculation and zero wastewater discharge.

According to the plan, in 2025 the province will expand the area to 1,500 hectares, of which De Heus Vietnam Co., Ltd. will implement 1,000 hectares and Minh Phu Seafood Corporation will implement 500 hectares. Expected yield is 22–25 tons/ha/crop, with a net profit margin of about 53% of revenue and FCR below 1.2. The goal is to transition from traditional farming to advanced recirculating technology, reduce CO₂ emissions, adapt to climate change and achieve international certifications such as ASC and BAP.

Relevant departments, agencies and localities are assigned to promote awareness, provide technical guidance and select eligible farming households to participate. The province will standardize technological processes, organize training and apply 4.0 technologies such as sensors, automatic feeding and environmental monitoring via cameras. At the same time, a coordination team, advisory group and green credit support will be established to assist farmers.

Ca Mau will also build the RAS-IMTA shrimp brand and encourage processing and export enterprises to collaborate with cooperatives and farmers in value chains that meet GlobalGAP and ASC standards. Scaling up the RAS-IMTA model is expected to create a breakthrough, reinforcing the direction of “ecological shrimp - high-tech shrimp” in line with Vietnam’s green growth strategy and the sustainable development of the shrimp industry.
