Representatives of firms gathered to discuss how to improve the value and quality of surimi and fishmeal products which bring high export turnover

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) By the end of November 2023, Vietnam’s seafood exports reached over 8.2 billion USD, down 20% over the same period in 2022. It is estimated that seafood exports in December reach nearly 800 million USD, equivalent to November, bringing the total seafood exports for 2023 to about 9 billion USD, 17% lower than the record level of nearly 11 billion USD of 2022.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) VASEP Surimi and Fishmeal Business Club launched on December 22, 2023 in Ho Chi Minh City, stemming from the fact that the increasing number and contribution activities of surimi and fishmeal enterprises in Vietnam’s seafood sector in general development of the global seafood.

(seafood. vasep.com.vn) Vietnam's cephalopod exports in the first 8 months of 2023 reached 417 million USD, down 15% over the same period last year. In August 2023 alone, exports of this product reached 67 million USD, down 11% over the same period. Despite continuing to see a decline, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports in August had a smaller decrease in value compared to other key seafood products.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Vietnam's cephalopod exports in the first 5 months of 2023 amounted to over 240 million USD, reflecting a 13% decline compared to the corresponding period last year. In May 2023 alone, the export value for this product reached 52 million USD, showing a decrease of 18% over the same period.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In recent days, many seafood businesses have reported a decline in business results and profits since the beginning of the year. The market landscape is largely covered in shades of gray as the global economy remains unstable, with inflation showing no signs of cooling down in many major countries. Vietnamese seafood exports to key markets continue to decline sharply in April 2023, reflecting the impact of inflation and economic downturn in countries with import demands and seafood consumption.

(seafood. vasep.com.vn) According to statistics of Korea Customs, Korea's import of frozen fish cakes/surimi in March 2023 reached nearly 9 thousand tons, down 35% compared to the same period in 2022. In the first quarter of 2023, the import turnover of this product group reached nearly 34 thousand tons, a decrease of 4%.

(seafood. vasep.com.vn) According to statistics of Korea Customs, Korea's import of frozen fish cakes/surimi in March 2023 reached nearly 9 thousand tons, down 35% compared to the same period in 2022. In the first quarter of 2023, the import turnover of this product group reached nearly 34 thousand tons, a decrease of 4%.

(seafood.vasep.com) Although negative growth is inevitable in the general decline trend of Vietnam's seafood exports, the export value of cephalopods recorded a slighter decrease compared to other key export seafood products.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) After growing in February 2023, Vietnam's exports of fish cakes and surimi in March reversed and decreased over the same period. The export value of this product group in March only reached 25 million USD, down 28%. In the first 3 months of 2023, the export turnover of fish cakes and surimi was nearly $68 million, down 23%.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Vietnam's crab exports continued to decline in March 2023. Export value this month reached 11 million USD, down 37% over the same period. The total value of crab exports in the first 3 months of the year was nearly 30 million USD, 42% lower than the same period in 2022. This decline is due to inflation still causing the demand for crabs to decrease in most of the main markets.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first two months of 2023, cephalopod products contributed 8% of Vietnam's total seafood export turnover, with a value of over $89 million. In February, the export of cephalopods increased by 37% over the same period last year, reaching 47 million USD.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to statistics of Vietnam Customs, Vietnam's exports of fish cakes and surimi tend to recover in February. The export value of fish cakes and surimi this month reached nearly 23 million USD, up 8%. However, this increase is not enough to offset the decrease in January, so in the first 2 months of 2023, Vietnam's export turnover of fish cakes and surimi still decreased by 21% compared to the same period in 2022, reaching more than 42 million dollars.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first two months of 2023, shellfish products (clams, snails, oysters, scallops) contributed nearly 2% of Vietnam's total seafood export turnover, with a value of over 19 million USD. Particularly in February, exports of shellfish increased by 39% over the same period last year to reach 10.4 million USD.
