The export value in this month reached only over 23 million USD, down 25% compared to the same period in 2023. In the first five months of 2024, Vietnam's exports of surimi and fish cake reached over 106 million USD, down 15%.

In May 2024 alone, the export value increased by 62% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 22 million USD. Fish cake and surimi exports decreased 11% in April compared to the same month the previous year, according to data from Vietnam Customs. Exports of this product totaled approximately $83 million in the first four months of this year, which is 12% less than the same time previous year.

Cumulatively, in the first 3 months of the year, export turnover reached more than 52 million USD, up 75% over the same period.

In the first quarter of this year, Vietnam's cephalopod exports are expected to reach about 136 million USD, down 2% over the same period last year.

Except for the same time last year, which fell during the Lunar New Year, the growth in cephalopod exports in the first month of this year is also a good signal to start the export of the whole year.

Vietnam's main exported shell mollusks include clams, accounting for 62% of export value, snails, accounting for 12%, oysters, accounting for 11%, and scallops, accounting for nearly 9%. In addition, some species with modest export value includes oysters, baby clams, abalone, and mussels.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has set a target to produce some 500,000 tonnes of seaweed by 2030 as part of the nation’s seafood development strategy.

C.P. Vietnam Livestock JSC said that it has cooperated with more than 2,500 livestock and aquatic farms across Vietnam.

More challenges are expected for Vietnam’s aquaculture exports in 2024, according to Tran Dinh Luan, General Director of the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Vietnamese businesses should make greater efforts to tap the potential of seafood exports to Switzerland, a trade official said.
