Promising prospect for clam farmers in Thua Thien-Hue province

(vasep.com.vn) In two recent years, farmers in Loc Binh commune, Phu Loc district of Thua Thien – Hue province gained success in breeding clams. It opens a promising prospect for local fish farmers.

Clam has good adaptation to natural conditions in the province, high disease resistance and fast growth thanks to being reared from wild seed.

Three household farmers in Loc Binh commune are currently rearing clams on the area of nearly 5 hectares. Clam farming doesn't require labors because farmers only need to check mesh screen to keep out predators without feeding clams daily. Besides, clams hardly catch diseases.

Clam seeds are stocked on July – August with density of 100 species per square meter. In the area of 100 square meter, farmers can harvest 3 quintal of commercial clams with the price of VND40,000-50,000 per kilogram, sometimes up to VND65,000-70,000.

Clam breeding in lagoons in Hue requires a small investment but fetches high profit thanks to favorable natural conditions and wild seed resource with low input costs.

Phu Loc district of the province plans to expand more 30 hectares of clam breeding area, mainly in Loc Binh and Vinh Hien communes.
