In January pelagic fish was exported to the tune of NOK 669 million (USD 108.2 million). This equals an increase of 9 per cent according to figures from theNorwegian Seafood Council.
The export of herring amounted to NOK 395 million (USD 63.9 million), an increase of 1 per cent, while mackerel amounted to NOK 263 million (USD 42.5 million) representing an increase of 48 per cent compared to last January.
Russia was the biggest market for pelagic fish in January, with Lithuania, Germany and the Ukraine following on Russia's heels.
“The increase in the export value is the result of greater mackerel export at a higher price.While Asia in particular has taken more mackerel at a higher price, Eastern Europe took more herring at a somewhat lower price in January,” says Kristin Lien, Marketing Analyst at the Norwegian Seafood Council.
There was 32,000 tonnes of frozen whole herring exported in January, an increase of 24 per cent. Russia, Lithuania and the Ukraine were our biggest markets in January.
The average price of frozen whole herring in January 2014 was NOK 6.77 (USD 1.09) representing a decline of 5 per cent compared to January 2013.
Frozen herring products exported in January amounted to 14,000 tonnes, an increase of 29 per cent. The biggest markets measured in volumes were Germany, Lithuania and Poland.
The average price of frozen herring products in January has been NOK 11.15 (USD 1.80), representing a decline of 14 per cent compared to January 2013.
Export of whole mackerel in January amounted to 22,000 tonnes, an increase of 21 per cent. The biggest buyers were China, Nigeria and the Netherlands. The average price for frozen whole mackerel was NOK 11.28 (USD 1.82 million), representing an increase of 23 per cent compared to January 2013.
