(vasep.com.vn) Up to September 2013, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to EU reported a sharp dip of 31.9 percent year-on-year. Cephalopod exports to 3 main consumer markets in EU block (Italy, Germany and Belgium) marked the reduction of 20.8 percent, 7 percent and 46.8 percent, respectively.
Due to contracting fish demand caused by EU’s economic crisis and strong competitiveness from European rivals (Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal) in terms of tariff, geographical position, freight; Vietnam’s cephalopod shipment to EU including Germany will go down and find hard to grow in the last quarter and the full year.
Germany was the fourth largest importer of mollusk, making up 6.4 percent among the world’s total imports of the item. Germany’s imports of cuttlefish and squid, shelled or not, frozen, dried, salted or in brine (HS code 030749) reported annual growth of 4 percent in volume and 11 percent in value.
According to statistics of Eurostat, in the first 6 months of this year, cuttlefish and squid, shelled or not, frozen, dried, salted or in brine (HS code 030749) were the main items imported into Germany, making up 36 percent of the country’s total mollusk imports. Vietnam held the sixth place as a cephalopod supplier to the country.
