(vasep.com.vn) In April 14th 2014, abalone seed hatchery in Bach Long Vy Island released about 6,000 abalone seed into the sea.
Besides sea cucumber, Bach Long Vy island is home to abalone. Due to overexploitation and other reasons, abalone resource in this island is in danger of extinction.
Research Institute for Marine Fisheries (RIMF) under Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) launched a project on establishing an abalone seed hatchery in Bach Long Vy Island. This project has been approved and implemented with the financial investment by MARD.
In 2012, RIMF in coordination with Young Volunteers team of Hai Phong city built the hatchery. In August 2013, abalone seed was produced artificially in the hatchery for the first time.
So far, the hatchery has produced 150,000 spats which can grow in natural environment. Currenlty, the abalone spats are released into the sea to restore its resource. In upcoming time, RIMF will transfer the technology of producing abalone seed to Young Volunteers team of the city to develop farming commercial abalone.
