Argentina: Upward trend for squid and shrimp exports

Argentina exported 409,201 tonnes of seafood between January and November 2013, a figure which shows an increase of 1.2 per cent compared to the same period in 2012 , when 403,970 tonnes were shipped abroad.

According to statistics from the National Health Service and Food Quality (SENASA) in the first 11 months of this year 229,857 tonnes of fish were exported, that is to say, 0.1 per cent more than in the same period in 2012 (229,534 tonnes).

Until November, 179,344 tonnes of shellfish were also sent abroad, 2.8 per cent more than the same time last year, when 174,436 tonnes were traded.

The major export item was hake (Merluccius hubbsi), with 110,879 tonnes, 17.8 per cent less than the 134,750 tonnes that were exported between January and November 2012.

Following is squid (Illex argentinus), with 98,871 tonnes, 53.3 per cent more than during the first 11 months of last year (64,464 tonnes), and shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri), with 72.128 tonnes, 20.2 per cent more than during the same period last year (59,997 tonnes).

Among the resources that increased their shipments abroad is the Patagonian anchovy (Engraulis anchovy), whose sales rose 19.2 per cent, from 6,240 tonnes in the period ranging from January to November 2012, to 7,441 tonnes in the same term in 2013 .

More croakers (Micropogonias furnieri) were exported: 37,080 against 39,478 tonnes in the previous year (up 6.4 per cent yoy).
