Vietnam seafood imports by Russia: suspension is lifted but extension is needed

(vasep.com.vn) As Russia recent ban on food from the US, EU and some other countries has been opposed, Vietnam seafood has many oppotunities in the market. However, the number of Vietnam exporters allowed to export seafood to Russia is just 7, which is not sufficient.

Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service (VPSS) lifted the suspension on seafood imported to Russia and Customs Union (including Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan) for 7 Vietnam seafood exporters. Mr. “This is really a good sign because Russia has long been one key market in Europe for Vietnam seafood enterprises”, said Mr.Truong Dinh Hoe - General Secretary of Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Vietnam seafood products such as fish, dried fish, sumiri, shrimp are annually imported to Russia with the value of US$100 million. Almost 8 months without exports to Russia became a disadvantage for Vietnam seafood businesses. As Russia recent ban on food from the US, EU and some other countries has been opposed which is expected to create more chances for Vietnam seafood. However, the number of Vietnam exporters allowed to export seafood to Russia is just limited at 7. There should have been more.

Russia had suspended imports of Vietnamese pangasius fillets since January 31, 2014 and local exporters have attributed high food hygiene requirements to the suspension.
