GENERAL INFORMATION

In Vietnam, the fishery sector plays an important role in the national economy, accounting for about 4-5 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and about 9-10% of national export revenue.

More than 4 millions of people working in the fishery and the growth in production have attributed to the fish exports. Thanks to strongly increase in many years, Vietnam ranks among the top ten seafood suppliers and its seafood products are exported to 170 markets in the world.

Shrimp, pangasius, tuna, squid and octopus are main seafood products exported by the country. In which, shrimp exports create about US$ 3.5 – 4 billion, make up 46-50% of the total seafood sales of Vietnam. Earnings from pangasius reached at US$ 1.7 – 1.8 billion (25% of the total) and exports from Tuna and Cephalopods are US$ 450 – 550 million for each.

Exports to the U.S, Japan, EU, China and South Korea make up 75% of Vietnam’s seafood sales to the wolrd.

Vietnam seafood exports to South Korea to rise

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Exports of Vietnam seafood products to South Korea are expected to increase strongly this year thanks to the free trade agreement between the two countries that took effect last December, according to the representative of the Korea Fishery Trade Association.

He said at the Busan International Seafood & Fisheries EXPO 2016 (BISFE EXPO 2016)'s press meeting recently held by the Korean Fishery Trade Association (KFTA) & the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

The BISFE Expo in Busan city is the largest international seafood trade exhibition in South Korea. BISFE Expo 2015 has the participation of 400 enterprises from 26 countries worldwide. Vietnam had 12 enterprises.

This year's fair will take place from October 27 to 29 with 800 booths from 400 enterprises worldwide displaying and introducing seafood products and seafood processing equipments.

At the press meeting, the Korean representative said that Korean market favors seafood products from Vietnam like shrimp, pangasius, tilapia…thanks to its food safety and hygiene.

“We will strive to do our best to introduce potential exporters to Vietnamese exhibitors at BISFE to create conditions for the two sides to develop business connections and come up with a trade agreement right at the fair,” he said.
