GENERAL INFORMATION

In Vietnam, the fishery sector plays an important role in the national economy, accounting for about 4-5 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and about 9-10% of national export revenue.

More than 4 millions of people working in the fishery and the growth in production have attributed to the fish exports. Thanks to strongly increase in many years, Vietnam ranks among the top ten seafood suppliers and its seafood products are exported to 170 markets in the world.

Shrimp, pangasius, tuna, squid and octopus are main seafood products exported by the country. In which, shrimp exports create about US$ 3.5 – 4 billion, make up 46-50% of the total seafood sales of Vietnam. Earnings from pangasius reached at US$ 1.7 – 1.8 billion (25% of the total) and exports from Tuna and Cephalopods are US$ 450 – 550 million for each.

Exports to the U.S, Japan, EU, China and South Korea make up 75% of Vietnam’s seafood sales to the wolrd.

Seafood production stable in August

(vasep.com.vn) Data from Directorate of Fisheries unveiled total seafood production in August.

589 thousand MT of seafood was produced in August, equivalent to 101.6% of the same period last year. Through August, seafood production has touched 4.25 million MT, up 3.0%.

With the help from the weather and the reduced oil price, fishermen were motivated to go on seatrips. Capture was estimated at 254 thousand MT, up 4.5%. Cumulative volume for the first 8 months of the year was 1,978 thousand MT, up 4.4%. Marine fish contributed 240.2 thousand MT, up 4.9%.

Aquaculture production was estimated at 335 thousand MT in August  and 2,269 thousand MT in 8 months, up 1.9%.

Shrimp farming area reached 648,568 hectares, combining of 583,776 hectares for black tiger shrimp and 64,792 hectares for whiteleg shrimp. Yields of black tiger shrimp was 149,307 MT and those for whiteleg shrimp was 137,908  MT. Total shrimp yields were 287,215 MT, lower than the previous year.

By August, pangasius has been reared in 3,878 hectares with harvest of 668,369 MT.
