GENERAL INFORMATION

In Vietnam, the fishery sector plays an important role in the national economy, accounting for about 4-5 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and about 9-10% of national export revenue.

More than 4 millions of people working in the fishery and the growth in production have attributed to the fish exports. Thanks to strongly increase in many years, Vietnam ranks among the top ten seafood suppliers and its seafood products are exported to 170 markets in the world.

Shrimp, pangasius, tuna, squid and octopus are main seafood products exported by the country. In which, shrimp exports create about US$ 3.5 – 4 billion, make up 46-50% of the total seafood sales of Vietnam. Earnings from pangasius reached at US$ 1.7 – 1.8 billion (25% of the total) and exports from Tuna and Cephalopods are US$ 450 – 550 million for each.

Exports to the U.S, Japan, EU, China and South Korea make up 75% of Vietnam’s seafood sales to the wolrd.

Seafood production reaching nearly 2 million MT in 4 months

(vasep.com.vn) Cumulative output was estimated at 1748.4 thousand MT, up 3.4% year-on-year.

Total seafood, both from capture and aquaculture in April, was estimated at 563.2 thousand MT, up 3.4% year-on-year, including 425.1 thousand MT of fish and 43.8 thousand MT of shrimp. Aquaculture output in April totaled 240.6 thousand MT, with 193.9 thousand MT of fish and 34.4 thousand MT of shrimp.

Favorable weather, lower fuel prices and relatively stable price encouraged fishermen to expand businesses. Capture output in April was 322.6 thousand MT, representing a 6.4% year-on-year increase. Aprroximately 312.6 thousand MT of marine fish was caught, reporting a 6.6% growth from 2014.

Cumulative output was estimated at 1748.4 thousand MT, up 3.4% year-on-year. Aquaculture production contributed 738.5 thousand MT, up 1.6%. Capture output reached 1009.9 thousand MT, up 4.4%. Marine fish capture was 961.5 thousand MT, up 4.7%. Approximately 3.9 thousand MT of tuna was captured, down 1/2% year-on-year.
