Vietnam’s shrimp exports are expected to reach a growth of 10-12% in 2022

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the morning of March 11, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the People's Committee of Soc Trang Province to organize an online conference called "Developing the Shrimp Industry in 2022 and signing regulation on cooperative management of brackish water shrimp breeds in 2022".

According to the report of the Directorate of Fisheries, in 2021, the country produced 41,000 broodstock shrimps (21,000 whiteleg shrimps and 20,000 giant tiger prawns); seed production reached 144.5 billion shrimps (increased by 11% over the same period in 2020).

In 2021, brackish water shrimp’s farming area reached 747 thousand hectares (giant tiger prawns’ farming area was 626 thousand hectares, whiteleg shrimps’ farming area was 121 thousand hectares). Shrimp production of all kinds in 2021 reached 970 thousand tons (increased by 4.3% compared to 2020); of which, there were 265 thousand tons of giant tiger prawn, 655 thousand tons of whiteleg shrimp, the rest were other shrimps. Shrimp export turnover in 2021 was 3.9 billion USD (increased by 5.4% compared to 2020).

In 2022, the country strives to produce about 260,000 - 270,000 broodstock shrimps (about 200,000-210,000 whiteleg shrimps and 60,000 giant tiger prawns); seed production will reach about 140-150 billion shrimps (100-110 billion whiteleg shrimps and 30-40 billion giant tiger prawns). Shrimp farming area is expected to expand to 750,000 ha; shrimp production of all kinds will reach 980 thousand tons; of which, there are 275 thousand tons of giant tiger prawns, 675 thousand tons whiteleg shrimps, and the rest are other shrimps. Shrimp export turnover will reach 4 billion USD.

According to Mr. Truong Dinh Hoe, General Secretary of Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in 2022, shrimp export demand of the world is expected to continue to recover and grow strongly, Vietnam’s shrimp exports would grow about 10-12%.

Also at the conference, the Directorate of Fisheries, the Department of Animal Health (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) as well as localities of shrimp seed production and shrimp farming, held a signing ceremony of the regulation on cooperative management of brackish water shrimp breeds in 2022.
