Vietnam’s seafood trade group and several Vietnamese seafood trading companies are considering filing a complaint with the U.S. Court of International Trade after the U.S. Department of Commerce announced unprecedented antidumping rates against Vietnamese pangasius exporters.

Vinh Hoan, one of Vietnam’s top pangasius exporting firms, has announced the launch of a new product that will be featured at the 2018 Seafood Expo Global in Brussels, Belgium.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In 2017, Vietnam’s pangasius exports reached US$1.78 billion, up 4.3% over 2016. Of that, exports to the U.S and EU in December 2017 continued to decline by 26% and 24%, respectively and the figure in 2017 decreased by 11% and 22.3% respectively over the same period last year.

Vietnam has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization against the United States, claiming the U.S. Department of Agriculture program targeting catfish inspections imposes illegal barriers to trade. The Southeast Asian nation is also seeking bilateral talks to resolve the issue

Pangasius exports to the UK were worth 45.7 million USD last year, an increase of 2.5 percent over the previous year.

The rapid growth of Vietnam’s pangasius shipments has met with several markets barriers in the European Union and United States, where the fish is being gradually pushed away.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) As of November 2017, Vietnam pangasius exports valued at US$1.62 billion, up 5.3% over the same period last year. In particular, the export value to the U.S and the EU recorded the falls while that to China - Hong Kong and other potential markets such as Brazil, Mexico and Saudi Arabia inched up.

Vietnam has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization over anti-dumping measures the United States has imposed on Vietnam’s exports of fish fillets, according to announcements from Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade and the WTO.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) As of 15th Oct 2017, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to Brazil totaled US$79.6 million, up 66.2% over the same period last year. This is considered as one of the potential importing markets of Vietnam with the good growth. In particular, in September 2017, exports to the market hit US$6.73 million, up 103.3% over the same period last year. Sales to the market reached the highest growth in the first three quarters of this year.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first nine months of 2017, Vietnam’s pangasius exports increased by 5.8% over the same period last year to eye US$1.3 billion, however, sales to the U.S and the EU were down.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first 9 months of 2017, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to Saudi Arabia reached US$40.48 million, up 4% over the same period last year. In 2017, Saudi Arabia was put in top 4 "alternative importing markets" of Vietnam with the good growth, which helped to offset the decline in sales to the EU and U.S.

The project - ESTABLISHING A SUSTAINABLE PANGASIUS SUPPLY CHAIN IN VIETNAM (SUPA) - supported 225 pangasius producers, processors, and farms to obtain resource efficiency and sustainable certification which strengthened exports and reduced CO2 emissions by 21 000 tonnes annually

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) As of July 2017, Vietnam’s pangasius exports totaled US$1 billion, up 8.2% over the same period last year. Out of top 10 major importing markets, despite the year-on-year fall of 23.5% of exports to the EU, shipments to some potential markets such as Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Saudi Arabia experienced the positive growth.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first half of this year, the Netherlands remained as the largest buyer of Vietnam pangasius in the EU, accounting for 2.7% of Vietnam’s total pangasius exports. This is also the largest importer of Vietnam’s value added pangasius.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first half of 2017, Vietnam’s pangasius exports totaled US$836.4 million, down 0.3% from a year before. Exports to main markets such as the U.S and the EU showed the decline, therefore, companies shifted to other big potential markets such as China, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Saudi Arabia. In QII/2017, Vietnam’s pangasius production had stabilized, the price of raw pangasius slowed down after the surge in April 2017.
