(vasep.com.vn) Seafood exports by Vietnam in August 2013 continued to increase by 4.5-5 percent to register an estimated turnover of US$590 million. The figure in Jan-Aug 2013 is to reach nearly US$4.1 billion, up 2.5 percent from the compatible period of 2012.
Shrimp exports reported the growth of 38 percent with export turnover of US$280 million in August 2013. Shrimp shipment up to Aug 2013 generated US$1.67 billion, up 18 percent from the same period of 2012. Whiteleg shrimp exports are accounting for over 46 percent of Vietnam’s total shrimp export value.
Whiteleg shrimp is making up an equal proportion in a comparison with that of black tiger shrimp. Exports of whiteleg shrimp will be boosted in some months ahead to compensate for shorter black tiger shrimp production. With average monthly shrimp exports of US$250 million, shrimp shipment in 2013 are expected to total US$2.5 billion – US$2.6 billion, up 12-16 percent compared to 2012 when sales of shrimp abroad reached US$2.24 billion.
In contrast, exports of pangasius, tuna and other marine products tend to drop. In August 2013, pangasius exports down 14 percent, tuna exports dropped 25 percent and cephalopod shipment fell 10.7 percent.
Year to date pangasius exports were estimated to register US$1.13 billion, down 2.5 percent from the compatible time of last year; tuna exports were slated to reach US$376 million, down 5 percent. In the upcoming months, exports of these items find it hard to recover due to instable supply of raw material and low demand from international markets.
