Mexico fosters seafood import from An Giang

(vasep.com.vn) On April 10th 2014, the delegation of Mexican enterprises have made a fact-finding visit to the Mekong Delta province of An Giang with an aim to seeking opportunities to import frozen seafood from the province. The event helps to facilitate the locality's pangasius exports.

The Mexican delegation inspected the processing of An Giang's frozen pangasius products and learned about the province's fish exports, aiming to import pangasius fillets and other value- added pangasius products of the locality.

The delegation was introduced about the farming, processing, consuming pangasius-derived products by two An Giang-based companies (Thuan An Production Trading and Service Co.,Ltd Cuu Long Fish Import-Export Corporation).

Alex Orozco, an executive of Mirpac Norte Mexico, said he is satisfied with the production and the quality of pangasius products made by local enterprises because they comply with international standards.

Pangasius products, especially fish fillets, and rice are key exports of An Giang at present. The province harvests 300,000 MT of raw pangasius every year and local seafood exporters sold their seafood products to nearly 100 countries and territories worldwide. Pangasius processors also produce a wide range of value added products such as fillet, fish ball, fish steak, fish paste and byproducts (fish fat and fishmeal).

According to the provincial Department of Industry and Trade, An Giang earned over US$93 million from exporting 38,600 MT of frozen seafood in the first quarter of 2014, up 5 percent in volume and 10 percent in value from a year ago.

Mexico is a new market for local enterprises. In mid-March, the Mexican Rice Council also visited the province to learn about its production and export of rice.
