PRESS RELEASE: The Sustainable Growth for Pangasius at European Market

(vasep.com.vn) Ho Chi Minh City, August 6th 2014 – In the framework of Vietfish 2014 and the EC-cofunded project “Establishing a Sustainable Pangasius Supply Chain in Vietnam” (SUPA), VASEP, Vietnam Pangasius Forum and the SUPA project partners (Vietnam Cleaner Production Centre (VNCPC), WWF Vietnam, WWF Austria & VASEP) in partnership with the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) joined together to host a “Vietnam Pangasius Forum - Vietfish 2014” with the theme “The sustainable growth for pangasius at European market” on Aug 6th 2014.

(vasep.com.vn) According to Vietnam Customs, from 1st January 2014 to 15th July 2014, Vietnam pangasius exports reached US$ 892.83 million, down 2.1% year on year. In 2013, pangasius exports to the United States and Russia declined due to technical barriers and anti-dumping duty.

(vasep.com.vn) According to Vietnam Customs, pangasius exports in the first 7 months of 2014 were US$ 972.19 million, down 1.3% year on year. The decline from March to May was followed by growth in June and July. Pangasius export value in July 2014 was US$ 147.7 million, up 9% year on year, in which, pangasius exported to EU and the United States, the 2 key markets, was reported positive growth rates at 10.1% and 5.3%, respectively.

Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) Duong Ngoc Minh said the current supply of fish seed can only meet 30 percent of demand for fish stock. It is expected that until the late April and the early May, seed market sees the recovery.
