(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to Vietnam Customs statistics, in the first 8 months of 2021, Vietnam pangasius exports reached over 1.8 billion USD, up 81% compared to the same period in 2021. In which, pangasius exports to the US accounted for 23%, equivalent to 421 million USD, an increase of 87%.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Vietnam shrimp exports in July continued the trend of slow down in June, reaching 381 million USD, down 14% compared to the same period 2021. In July, among the main markets, exports to the US and China decreased 54% and 17% respectively. Shrimp exports to the remaining markets such as Japan, Korea and the EU maintained the positive growth.

(seafood.vasep.vn.com) In the first 5 months of 2022, Vietnam’s seafood exports to the US reached nearly 1.1 billion USD, an increase of 65% compared to the same period last year. Vietnam seafood exports to this market is expected to gain 2.4 - 2.5 billion USD in 2022 , going up by 25% compared to 2021.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In May 2022, Vietnam's shrimp export turnover reached 457 million USD, an increase of 31% compared to the same period last year. Accumulating the first five months of 2022, Vietnam's shrimp export turnover went up 41% in comparison to the same period last year, to 1.9 billion USD. In May, the growth rate of Vietnam's shrimp exports to the US slowed down while exports to China went up.

Besides the scarcity of supply during two years of Covid-19, the temporary suspension of seafood imports from Russia by the US and Europe is creating a “golden opportunity” for Vietnamese pangasius products to increase market share in these two markets.

The Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS) under the United States Department of Agriculture has recognised six more Vietnamese pangasius processing factories that are eligible to export products to the US, raising the number of establishments to 19, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s National Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department (NAFIQAD).

The demand for US shrimp imports from Vietnam has been quite stable since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Vietnamese shrimp in the US market is becoming more and more competitive when India (the largest supplier of shrimp in the US) also faces many barriers due to the Covid epidemic. The market share of Vietnamese shrimp in the US increased from about 8% (2020) to nearly 10% in the first 9 months of 2021.
