Vietnam's canned tuna exports still increase by 17% in 2024

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Despite facing numerous challenges in the second half of the year, Vietnam's canned tuna exports concluded 2024 with a 17% increase compared to 2023, reaching USD 299 million. To maintain this growth momentum in 2025, the canned tuna production and export sector requires coordinated efforts from all stakeholders.

2024 marked the first time that Vietnam’s canned tuna exports reached USD 299 million. This result is even more impressive considering the difficulties the Vietnamese tuna industry faced, such as restrictions from major countries, the global economy slowly recovering from its downturn, which impacted seafood consumption, and limitations in domestic raw material supplies.

According to data from Vietnam Customs, the market for Vietnam's canned tuna exports continues to expand. In 2024 alone, these products were exported to more than 80 countries worldwide. The top five import markets for Vietnam’s canned tuna were the U.S., Israel, Germany, Lebanon, and Egypt, which together accounted for over 62% of the total export value for this product group. Exports to all five of these markets increased compared to the previous year. Notably, exports to Middle Eastern countries like Israel and Lebanon saw significant growth, with increases of 43% and 155%, respectively.

In the EU market, canned tuna exports grew by 4% in 2024. However, the growth rate for this product group slowed in the second half of the year and is showing signs of decline.
