Vietnam - top largest suppliers of canned tuna to Japan

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In early 2017, tuna prices soared which significantly affected on demand for tuna in Japan. In addition, the demand for tuna in Japan was on the downward trend due to the trend of increasing the meat consumption of young people.

Vietnam currently ranked the 17th in top largest tuna supplier to Japan, accounting for 0.6% of the total tuna imports into this market.

Taiwan, Malta and China mainly export  fresh/frozen tuna to Japan while exports of canned tuna from Southeast Asian countries to the market are in a better position. Of that, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam are top 4 largest suppliers of canned tuna to the market. Imports of this item from Vietnam into Japan took up 2%.

The average import price of fresh/frozen tuna into Japan in the first three months of 2017 ranged from US$7.63 to $ 8.54/kg.

The average import price of processed/canned tuna into this market ranged from US$5.15 to $5.21/kg.

Currently, canned tuna from Vietnam has to compete strongly with the same item from Thailand and the Philippines.
