Vietnam frozen tuna exports to France went up 94%

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first 8 months of 2017, Vietnam’s tuna exports to France jumped up 94% over the same period last year (from US$915.4 thousand to US$1.77 million). From the 13th rank, France became the 11th biggest buyer of Vietnam tuna in the EU. Exports of frozen tuna (HS code 03) to the market increased sharply over 2016. This was a positive sign for Vietnamese enterprises who wish to expand their importing markets to the EU in 2017.

Over the past 10 years, Vietnam mainly exports frozen tuna loins/fillets to France, accounting for over 76%. The export value of frozen tuna loins/fillets to the market increased steadily in the period (2007-2013), from US$1.5 million in 2007 to US$3.9 million in 2013.

However, from 2014 to 2016, Vietnam’s shipments of frozen tuna loins/fillets to France tended to decrease. Exports of processed and canned tuna declined from US$3.9 million in 2013 to US$1.4 million in 2016.

Vietnam's exports of fresh/live/frozen/dried tuna to France were on the downward trend after peaking at US$170,000 in 2010 from US$12,000. By the end of 2016, sales of this item to France dropped to US$8.2 thousand.

Over the past 4 years, the demand for tuna in France has decreased which led to a rise in tuna imports from other countries, including Vietnam.

The Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand stayed as top leading suppliers of tuna to France with the tax of approximately 20.5% -24%.

In the coming time, Vietnamese enterprises expected to boost shipments of high value tuna products to the market.
