(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first three months of 2018, Chile emerged as the potential tuna importing market of Vietnam. Vietnam's tuna exports to this market in this period reached nearly US$2.9 million, an increase of 125% over the same period in 2017.
Tuna loins/fillets (HS code 0304) are the main export product of Vietnam, accounting for 54% of total export value. The remaining is canned/processed tuna products. This year, Vietnamese exports of canned/processed tuna to Chile touched US$1.2 million, increasing sharply by 1,376% from the same period last year.
In 2017, Chile imported more than 60 thousand MT of tuna, worth by US$82 million, up 285% in volume and 30% in value over the same period in 2016. In early 2018, tuna imports into this country continue to increase.
Chile currently increased imports of processed/canned tuna for the domestic demand. This product accounted for 98% of the total import volume of tuna into Chile in 2017. The remaining was frozen tuna loins/fillets.
In 2017, Chile imported tuna from 10 countries around the world. Thailand, Ecuador, Spain, China and Vietnam stayed as top five largest tuna suppliers to the country. Chilean tuna imports from these exporters increased compared to 2016. The average import duty on canned tuna into Chile for Thailand, Ecuador, China and Vietnam is 0%, while that for Spain is 4%.
11 Asia-Pacific countries, including Vietnam and Chile, signed the Comprehensive and Progressive Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), Chile projected to become one of potential markets for Vietnamese tuna enterprises in the coming time.
